1. The POE (Power over Ethernet) port on an IP67 (Ingress Protected 67) rated Access Point (AP) is completely & properly isolated and will not shock you – even if you use your bare hands to place it gently underwater.
2. An IP67 rated Access Point will float in water
3. At full transmit power, we managed to connect to the SSID (Service Set Identifier) setup on the AP and got a very weak signal – approx. -84dBm (decibel milliwatts) on both the 2.4Ghz and 5.0Ghz radios.
4. We had to get up close, really close, to the AP, to detect the SSID.
5. Roy’s iPhone is definitely waterproof to IP67 standards. It even breathes underwater – check the video for proof!
6. We don’t really know of any use cases where Wi-Fi is actually useful underwater (yet) – but if you know of any, please let us know.
7. We were able to probe the AP remotely to check it’s internal temperature and can confirm that the water definitely lowers the internal temperature of the insides of the AP.
8. We learnt that submarines do communicate underwater using ELF (Extremely Low Frequency/ies) – which was not actually invented by Extreme Networks – in case you were wondering)
9. Networking is FUN and interesting and if you’re looking for a new career direction and have a thing for bits and bytes, then you should consider Computer Networking. You could get to design the next generation of Wi-Fi that may one day be used on Mars!
10. In the video, Isaac mentions that IP67 is water resistant to 1.5m for 30 minutes. He got it wrong. It’s actually a max of 1.0m for 30 minutes.
