In this demo, you learn how to create an external catalog in Oracle AI Data Platform Workbench so you can connect to external data sources, register metadata, and query data without duplicating it. The tutorial follows a data analyst use case that focuses on accessing the most current sales data from an Oracle Autonomous AI Lakehouse instance while keeping data in place.
You start in the master catalog and select Create Catalog. After naming the catalog, you choose the external catalog type so you can register metadata from Oracle Autonomous AI Lakehouse without ingesting the underlying data. Next, you select Oracle Autonomous AI Lakehouse as the external source type and choose how to connect. The walkthrough shows how to add a wallet when the lakehouse is in a different tenancy, then select a service setting based on expected workload and cost, such as low, medium, or high.
After entering the wallet password and database credentials, you test the connection to confirm the setup is correct. Once the connection succeeds, you create the catalog, verify it appears in the master catalog, and review schema and table metadata. Finally, you see how this external connection enables you to query external data directly from notebooks in Oracle AI Data Platform Workbench without moving or storing the data in Workbench.
