Lightning Talk: Can the Internet Function Without the Internet? – Samarth Sharma, Metafic
We rely on the internet for almost everything, but what happens when it’s not available? Whether due to government restrictions, natural disasters, or network failures, losing internet access can be more disruptive than we realize. But what if we could still communicate, share data, and run web applications without a traditional internet connection?
In this session, I’ll explore how a decentralized, offline-capable web can keep things running even when traditional internet infrastructure fails. We’ll dive into:
– Mesh networks that let devices connect directly without ISPs.
– Offline-first web applications designed to work without constant connectivity.
– Decentralized storage like IPFS, which allows data sharing beyond centralized servers.
– Local-first CRDT databases, enabling real-time collaboration even in isolated environments
I’ll also showcase a live demo of a web app that works offline and syncs data between nearby devices, proving that we don’t always need the internet to stay connected.
