Nextcloud Hub 10 Security: Multiple layers of encryption, designed to keep your data safe

Discover how Nextcloud protects your data:

1️⃣ TLS (Transport Layer Security): This is what your browser calls HTTPS. It protects data in transit, whether from your browser, desktop client, or mobile app to the server.

2️⃣ Server-side encryption: Your data is stored in encrypted form at rest. If a server or hard drive is stolen, the data is unreadable without the keys.

3️⃣End-to-end encryption (E2EE): Protects against even an untrusted server administrator. Files are encrypted on your device (desktop or mobile) using a local password and mnemonic that never leaves your client. The server admin cannot view your files.

⚠️ Until now, this meant E2EE files couldn’t be viewed or downloaded via the web interface, since the browser would need access to your mnemonic. But now you have a choice.

In your personal settings, you can opt in to browsing, viewing, and downloading end-to-end encrypted files via the browser by entering your mnemonic locally. It’s optional, putting control in your hands.

More E2EE news: Video calls in Nextcloud Talk are now end-to-end encrypted. Audio and video are encrypted on the client and decrypted only by the recipient, so even the server can’t peek.

And don’t forget that Nextcloud also offers Brute Force protection, now easier for admins to configure. Define rules and policies to meet compliance requirements and stop repeated password-guessing attempts.
