Takatoshi Okagawa, SVP of NTT DOCOMO’s R&D division, introduces the strategic collaboration with AWS for their recent 5G core network and vRAN (virtual radio access network) projects. For DOCOMO’s nationwide vRAN deployment starting in 2025, they’ve chosen AWS’s EKS Anywhere as the virtualization platform, alongside NEC vRAN software, Qualcomm Hardware Accelerator, and HPE Hardware platform. This vRAN architecture promises flexible deployment of new features, shorter time to market, and utilization of increasingly powerful and energy-efficient COTS hardware and accelerators. EKS functions will enable automated network management and operation, reducing costs and improving service availability. DOCOMO anticipates leveraging the AWS ecosystem for value creation, benefiting from numerous applications running on EKS and engineers familiar with its tools. This could allow for adding value to their network by implementing edge AI on the vRAN platform, sharing computing resources.
