Opportunities and Challenges on Merging HW Security Features into Linux Mainline Kernel – Kevin Brodsky, Arm; James Morris, Microsoft; Carl Shaw, Codasip; Scott Constable, Intel; Moderated by Elena Reshetova, Intel
The discussion will focus on the following aspects with participation of the audience. Why some HW security mechanisms have relatively easy enabling path into the Linux mainline, but others take years to get merged even if several active attempts are performed across industry? What aspects matter the most or end up being crucial? What should be paid extra attention to? The obvious aspects for everyone are clear: how complex a given technology is to enable, maintain, its performance implications.
But also, non-so obvious ones that are often harder to argue: how realistic is the threat model? How specific or narrow focused this threat model is? Does it make a practical difference for existing use cases? The aim of the panel is to brainstorm together and provide a guidance and suggestions for people on how to position a new HW security feature in its best light to help future submissions to progress faster to mainline? The examples technologies we can talk about are CHERI, Protection Keys, HLAT, etc.
