Issue 6 of Optical Transmission Minipedia: Let’s explore Optical Scheduling. In a WDM system, optical scheduling involved only multiplexing (MUX) and demultiplexing (DEMUX) in the initial stage, MUX/DEMUX boards can be used to form a fixed optical add/drop multiplexer (FOADM) site, on-site manual fiber connection is required, which is time-consuming and labor-intensive. To address dynamic wavelength management, the reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM) is introduced. At its core lies the Wavelength Selective Switch (WSS), which enables precise control over wavelength pass-through and adding/dropping operations at any network node. By selectively allowing or blocking specific wavelengths, ROADMs enable flexible wavelength grooming across the network, without the need for on-site intervention, thereby delivering a streamlined and efficient solution.
