Using GitHub statistics as telemetry for app developers
by Christian Wolf
There is a basic conflict between protecting the users data and the with of the app developers to know what versions are installed on the instances on the earth. Adding some sort of telemetry to the apps pushed out opens all sorts of bad taste regarding data safety.
One cheap and free option is to look at the download counter on GitHub. It comes at no additional cost for data acquisition. However, it provides only momentary data and no history. I combined that with my personal Munin daemon to mirror the download counts of Nextcloud’s Cookbook app.
