Jayla (aged 3) has Rett syndrome, which makes receiving support while walking a necessity. But on November 1, 2023, she took her first steps without any help! Her nine-year-old brother Joseph has always been supportive of her, and when she finally walked up the steps on her own, he was overjoyed! Rett syndrome is a rare genetic mutation that affects brain development. A child will present to be developing normally, but will suddenly regress and lose skills, such as the use of their hands. However, every child’s case is different, as Rett syndrome exists on a spectrum.
