Why healthcare trails in open source adoption | Linux Foundation Research

The healthcare industry is one of the few remaining sectors that has yet to fully embrace open source solutions. While there are valid reasons for this slower adoption, the latest Linux Foundation research sheds light on the current state of open source in healthcare.

Anna Hermansen, Researcher and Ecosystem Manager at the Linux Foundation Research, shared insights about their ongoing project during the recent Open Source Summit in Vienna, Austria.
The study aims to make healthcare more interoperable, efficient, and transparent. Key findings indicate the lack of cohesive efforts in healthcare open source initiatives and the need for an open source architecture similar to the telco blueprint. Challenges to adoption include regulations, risk aversion, and the dominant position of incumbent electronic health record (EHR) providers. With input from a global perspective, the report advocates for a collaborative framework to bolster open source projects like Rare Camp, facilitating better data sharing and AI integration in healthcare systems.
