How to Get Faster WiFi at Home in 4 Steps (2026)

Getting faster WiFi at home follows a four-step sequence:
try three free fixes first, run a speed test to isolate
where the problem is, identify which of five bottlenecks
is causing the slowdown, then upgrade only if the first
three steps don’t solve it. Most WiFi complaints are fixed
before spending anything.

STEP 1: THREE FREE FIXES (TRY THESE FIRST)
Fix 1 — Power-cycle your router: unplug it for a full

router runs sets the maximum your network can deliver.

STEP 4: WHEN TO UPGRADE AND WHAT TO LOOK FOR
If the first three steps don’t resolve the problem,
look for these four specs when replacing hardware:
WiFi standard: WiFi 7 for new purchases in 2026,
WiFi 6E as a more affordable option.
Device capacity: current routers handle 100+ active
connections — older units often cap below 30.
Coverage area: a single router covers up to 3,500
sq ft reliably. Larger or multi-story homes need
a mesh system covering 10,000 sq ft or more.
Ports: higher-end routers with 2.5Gbps or 10Gbps
ports signal a more capable overall device —
important when your internet plan exceeds 1Gbps.
