Think turning off ZFS compression makes TrueNAS faster? It does the opposite.
Your disk write speed is almost always the real bottleneck, not your CPU. Compressing data in RAM before it hits disk means fewer physical writes, which means faster transfers, less SSD wear, and more free space, with next to no CPU cost on modern hardware.
If you’ve got compression turned off, turn it back on. LZ4 or ZSTD, set at the dataset level.
